چکیده
This paper introduces endogenous technological change in a Hotelling-Herfindahl model of natural resource use to study the recent developments U.S. gas industry. We consider optimal forward-looking technology investments, and implications for order extraction conventional shale gas, backstop technology, characterize development prices. find that investments increase during gas. Once production shifts towards decline. Consistent with current trends, our theory explains how prices can follow U-shaped path. The calibrated suggests continues grow continue decrease until 2050. analytically numerically show introduction carbon tax would reduce thus could drastically temporal patterns extraction. behaviour firms is crucial such an effect, which does not occur models treat improvement as unanticipated shock

متن کاملEndogenous Technological Change in Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change
Suggestions on international cooperation in climate policy beyond 2012 include substi-tuting or complementing international environmental agreements (IEA) with technologyoriented agreements (TOA). We look at the impact of TOA on environmental cooperationin the framework of coalition stability. Using a numerical model, we analyze the differ-ences of several TOA and how they inter...
متن کاملEnergy taxes and endogenous technological change
This paper studies the effects of a tax on energy use in a growth model where market structure is endogenous and jointly determined with the rate of technological change. Because this economy does not exhibit the scale effect (a positive relation between TFP growth and aggregate R&D), the tax has no effect on the steady-state growth rate. It has, however, important transitional effects that giv...
